Garmin GPSMAP External Display Recommendations

The right external marine display depends on the Garmin GPSMAP model being used. Resolution, aspect ratio, screen size, and price all affect whether a display is a good match.

The comparisons above use current advertised specifications and pricing to compare Get Fish Marine, NBT Marine, and Russell Marine Products external displays for common Garmin GPSMAP units.

GPSMAP 1242 / 1243 / 1243xsv

For anglers using a GPSMAP 1242 or 1243, the Get Fish Marine Core 16 is our recommended 14–16 inch option.

The Core 16 provides a 15.6-inch, 1920 × 1080 display for $1,799.99. The NBT Marine Pro 14 is smaller at 14.3 inches, uses a 1200 × 800 panel, and costs $2,200. The NBT Destroyer 16 uses a 3840 × 2160 4K panel, but that extra panel resolution is unnecessary for this Garmin application and comes at a significantly higher price of $3,199.99.

For customers wanting a larger screen, the Get Fish Marine Edge 19 is our recommended 17–19 inch option. It provides an 18.5-inch 1920 × 1080 display and uses the full screen with the GPSMAP 1242 / 1243.

The Russell Marine Products Flex 19 is also an 18.5-inch 1920 × 1080 display, but when used with these Garmin units the image is pillarboxed with black bars because of the aspect-ratio difference. The Flex 19 is also approximately $1,000 more than the Edge 19.

For customers wanting a 22-inch-class display, the Get Fish Marine Pano 22 is the recommended option. Its 21.5-inch 1920 × 1080 panel is appropriately matched to the Garmin source. The NBT Marine Battleship Pro QHD uses a 2560 × 1440 panel, adding resolution that the Garmin cannot take advantage of while costing approximately $1,600 more.

GPSMAP 8410 / 8610 / 8610xsv

For the GPSMAP 8410 and 8610 family, the Get Fish Marine Core 16 is our recommended 14–16 inch display.

The Core 16 uses a 1920 × 1080 panel, providing a strong resolution match while keeping the price at $1,799.99. The NBT Marine Pro 14 uses a lower-resolution 1200 × 800 panel, while the NBT Destroyer 16 uses a 4K 3840 × 2160 panel that is substantially over-specified for this Garmin source.

For a larger display, the Get Fish Marine Edge 19 provides an 18.5-inch screen with excellent value and a 1920 × 1080 panel.

The Russell Marine Products Flex 19 can display the Garmin image, but these 16:10 Garmin units are shown with black bars on the 16:9 Flex 19 panel. This means some of the available screen width is not used.

GPSMAP 8412 / 8612 / 8612xsv

The GPSMAP 8412 and 8612 use a 16:9 video format, making 1920 × 1080 external displays a particularly straightforward match.

For 14–16 inch installations, the Get Fish Marine Core 16 is our recommended option. The Core 16 provides a 15.6-inch 1920 × 1080 display for $1,799.99.

The NBT Marine Pro 14 uses a 1200 × 800 panel with a different aspect ratio, making it a poorer resolution and format match for these Garmin units. The NBT Destroyer 16 uses a 4K panel, but the additional panel resolution provides little benefit when the Garmin source itself is not supplying 4K content.

For 17–19 inch installations, the Get Fish Marine Edge 19 is our recommended option. It provides the same 18.5-inch screen size as the Russell Marine Products Flex 19 and the same 1920 × 1080 native resolution, but at approximately $1,000 less.

The NBT Marine Cruiser Pro QHD uses a 2560 × 1440 panel, which exceeds the useful resolution of the Garmin source. The Get Fish Marine Define 17 is also over-specified for this particular Garmin because it is a 4K display, although it remains an option for customers planning to move to a 4K-capable Garmin GPSMAP system later.

For 22-inch-class installations, the Get Fish Marine Pano 22 is our recommended option. It offers a 21.5-inch 1920 × 1080 display at $2,599.99. The NBT Marine Battleship Pro QHD is similar in physical screen size but uses a 2560 × 1440 panel and costs roughly $1,600 more, despite the additional resolution not providing a meaningful advantage with the 8412 / 8612 source.

GPSMAP 9010 / 9210 / 9210xsv

The Garmin GPSMAP 9010 and 9210 output 1920 × 1200 and use a 16:10 video format. Despite being part of Garmin's newer GPSMAP family, the 9010 / 9210 is not a 4K video source. This makes an appropriately matched HD external display a better value than paying for QHD or 4K panel resolution that the Garmin cannot fully utilize.

For 14–16 inch installations, the Get Fish Marine Core 16 is our recommended option. It provides a 15.6-inch 1920 × 1080 display for $1,799.99.

The NBT Marine Pro 14 is smaller at 14.3 inches, has a lower 1200 × 800 resolution, and costs approximately $400 more. The NBT Destroyer 16 provides a similar physical screen size to the Core 16 but uses a 3840 × 2160 4K panel. Because the GPSMAP 9010 / 9210 is supplying 1920 × 1200 rather than 4K video, much of that additional panel resolution cannot provide additional source detail, while the display costs approximately $1,400 more than the Core 16.

For 17–19 inch installations, the Get Fish Marine Edge 19 is our recommended option. The Edge 19 provides an 18.5-inch 1920 × 1080 panel and is configured to provide a full-screen presentation with these 16:10 Garmin units. At $2,299.99, it also provides the lowest price per square inch among the compared 17–19 inch options.

The NBT Marine Cruiser Pro QHD is slightly smaller at 18.3 inches and uses a 2560 × 1440 panel, providing more panel resolution than the GPSMAP 9010 / 9210 source requires while costing approximately $1,400 more than the Edge 19.

The Russell Marine Products Flex 19 has the same 18.5-inch screen size and 1920 × 1080 native resolution as the Edge 19, but the 16:10 Garmin image is displayed with black bars rather than using the full screen. It also costs approximately $1,000 more.

The Get Fish Marine Define 17 offers another option for customers who prioritize a 16:10 full-screen format. Its selectable 2560 × 1600 mode matches the Garmin's 16:10 aspect ratio, although its higher-resolution panel exceeds what is necessary for the 1920 × 1200 Garmin source.     Specification of 17.3'' 4K Full…

GPSMAP 9013 / 9213 / 9213xsv

The GPSMAP 9013 and 9213 are capable of 3840 × 2160 4K video output. Unlike the GPSMAP 9010 / 9210, these models can take advantage of a native 4K external display, making the Get Fish Marine Define series particularly well suited to these Garmin systems.

For 17–19 inch installations, the Get Fish Marine Define 19 is our recommended option. It provides an 18.5-inch 3840 × 2160 display for $3,199.99, allowing the Garmin's 4K output to be displayed at native 4K resolution.     Specification of 18.5'' 4K Full…

The NBT Marine 18-inch Cruiser Pro 4K also provides a 3840 × 2160 panel, but its 18.3-inch screen is slightly smaller and its $4,199.99 price is approximately $1,000 higher.

The Russell Marine Products Flex 19 provides an 18.5-inch screen for $3,299.99, but its native resolution is only 1920 × 1080. It therefore cannot display the full 4K resolution available from the GPSMAP 9013 / 9213.

For customers with less installation space, the Get Fish Marine Define 17 provides a 17.3-inch 3840 × 2160 alternative for $2,749.99. It maintains native 4K resolution while fitting installations where an 18.5-inch display may be too large.     Specification of 17.3'' 4K Full…

For 22-inch-class installations, the Get Fish Marine Define 22 is our recommended 4K option. It combines a 21.5-inch screen with 3840 × 2160 resolution for $3,499.99, providing approximately 197 square inches of display area while retaining the Garmin's 4K output.     Specification of 21.5'' 4K Full…

By comparison, the NBT Marine 18-inch Cruiser Pro 4K costs approximately $700 more while providing a substantially smaller 18.3-inch screen. The Russell Marine Products Flex 19 is also significantly smaller and limited to 1920 × 1080.

For customers who prioritize maximum physical screen size at a lower price rather than maintaining 4K resolution, the Get Fish Marine Pano 22 provides the same 21.5-inch-class screen size with a 1920 × 1080 panel for $2,599.99.

HD Garmin vs. 4K Marine Displays

A higher-resolution external monitor does not automatically produce a better image.

The external display can only work with the video signal supplied by the Garmin GPSMAP unit. When an HD Garmin source is connected to a QHD or 4K monitor, the additional pixels in the monitor do not create additional sonar or mapping detail that was not present in the original Garmin output.

For that reason, Get Fish Marine generally recommends matching HD Garmin GPSMAP units with appropriately sized HD displays and reserving 4K displays such as the Define series for Garmin units that can actually take advantage of UHD output.

The GPSMAP 9010 / 9210 is an important example: although it belongs to the newer Garmin family, its 1920 × 1200 output does not make it a 4K source. The GPSMAP 9013 / 9213, by comparison, can output 3840 × 2160 and can take full advantage of a native 4K Define display.

Which Get Fish Marine Display Should I Choose?

For most installations:

  • Core 16 is the best compact option for 14–16 inch installations using an HD Garmin GPSMAP.
  • Edge 19 is the best overall 17–19 inch choice for compatible HD Garmin systems, including the 1920 × 1200 GPSMAP 9010 / 9210.
  • Pano 22 is the best choice when maximum screen size is the priority on an HD Garmin system.
  • Define 17 provides a compact 4K option and can also provide a full-screen 16:10 format for GPSMAP models such as the 9010 / 9210.
  • Define 19 is our recommended 17–19 inch external display for the 4K-capable GPSMAP 9013 / 9213.
  • Define 22 is our recommended 22-inch-class display for customers who want a large external screen while retaining the GPSMAP 9013 / 9213's 4K output.
